There is an adage that says: Whatever will be, will surely be. And that whatever a mind conceives, yes, it can achieve it. I think this has a reflection on my road to the NYSC-MDGs Advocacy Project.

To start with, I came to know the MDGs in year 2006 as part of the United Nations programme towards achieving global sustainable developments by the year 2015. Then, I used to engage in phone call business at the Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun State. As a young entreprenuerer that loves legitimate business transactions, I have had opportunities to attend NYSC Orientation Programmes at the Osun State NYSC Orientation Camp for three consecutive times (Batch ‘A’ & ‘B’ 2006 and Batch ‘A’ 2007), from beginnings to the ends. In each Batch, I used to make friends with the corps members. I was also using the avenue to learn about the dos and don’ts of the NYSC scheme as regards the Orientation Programme with a dream that in the nearest future, I will be in the corps members’ shoes. I envisaged then that my involvements in the camp activities would have become part and parcel of my system. Don’t be surprised, there was never a time I didn’t make more than N17,000:00 as my profits within those three weeks.

On a serious note, one of those things that I don’t used to miss out at the camps was the attendance of lectures. I have listened to the lectures of different government parastatals, agencies, commissions, directorates, such as NAFDAC, NDLEA, NDE, NAPEP, ICPC, SSS, CIVIL DEFENCE, etc. Likewise, I have listened to the lectures of the motivational speakers, banks, recruitment consulting firms, professional bodies such as the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) etc. Dear readers, of all the lectures, the one that remains constantly engraved on my heart is that of the MDGs- Millennium Development Goals! It entered my blood stream that I was strong-minded to join the team whenever I was called upon for a National Service under the NYSC Scheme. The reason could have been because of my enthusiasm for human development and empowerment in all spheres of live.

As God wanted it, I graduated from the Department of Mining Engineering, The Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria, in year 2008. I was mobilized for the NYSC 2009 Batch ‘A’. On getting to the Orientation Camp, I was on the look out for the second week to arrive which I had known for lectures. PET on HIV/AIDS was the first group to show up. Then, I was disturbed not to have seen the MDGs Team. The following day, I saw one man wearing the MDGs kits (face cap and T-shirt). At this, I was so happy. I suddenly stopped him and asked him few questions on MDGs. Unknowingly to me, the person happened to be one of the four DKFs (Development Knowledge Facilitators) posted to my camp. When the man read the zeal in me, he offered me an opportunity to be part of the drama group being prepared for the sensitization. Naturally, I voluntarily submitted myself.

The sensitization programme was held amidst the camp officials and the corps members. It ended with an interactive session. Thereafter, interested corps members were asked to write their names as volunteers to the project. That was done with the intention of admitting us for an extensive Training Sessions on Debate-To-Action (DTA) and enlistment of passionate corps members into the NYSC-MDGs Awareness Creation (MAC) Community Development Service (CDS) Group.

Finally, that was how I joined the MAC family and I had never regretted it.
